"Then Again" by Shirana Shahbazi

The work by an Iranian born artist, Shirana Shabazi, displays the various type of the image; abstract forms, still life, representative landscape and portraits without a simple linear perspective as the background narrative. Next to the almost commercial picture looking still life image, Shabazi puts the geometric patterns or black and white portraits. It should not be easily enjoyed because of the inconsistent arrays of the visual experiences, although temperament (or I should say, smell) prevalent all over her works brings a strong and persistent message to me and makes me attracted to her work immediately. It literally mentally speaks to me. I feel almost familiar to them. It fells like a memory or dream that I think of from time to time, where the various different emotions pop up in my mind as the image.

We digest our visual experiences and retain them in our mind on our own way. The first experiences of the visual encounter never appear same as the original shape and color. It should transform to something abstract and different. You perceive the things in front of you in the (almost) same way as the other people. System of memorizing can be, I shall say, same as the mechanical device, compared to system of forgetting. We can see and remember the same things as the common language or icon. But once you keep it to yourself and try to retain it for a certain time, things turn and look different to each other. We don't always remember the same things in the same way. We shape up our memory and visual experience on our own way. The work by Shabazi reminds me of my uncertain perception to reality and against memory.

"Then Again" is made on the occasion of the exhibition "Much Like Zero" at Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland from Sep. 3-Nov 13, 2011. The show was curated by Urs Stahel, director of Fotomuseum Winterthu.
